Pictures on: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/MelbourneAndItsSurroundingsSeptToDec2009# We’re back! Sorry for not keeping you updated for so long. Since we last wrote, we were in Perth. Well once we reached Perth, everything seemed to go horribly wrong. We put the pnl van in for a service and found that the mechanic in Darwin hadn’t fixed the breaks properly so they had to be reconditioned completely. Then the money grabbing Perth mechanic told us there was major problems with the […]

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/FromBroomeToPerth# Itinerary: Carnavon – Shark Bay – Kalbarri National Park – Kalbarri - Pink Lake – Geraldton – Dongara Port Dennison – Lesueur NP – Jurien Bay – Pinnacles – Yanchep NP - Perth After a lazy rise we drove the short distance to Canarvon where we were hoping to fish. The bad weather quickly put pay to that idea. We then went to check out the 1 Mile Jetty, which had partially burned down and still charged a fee to walk along it. Not […]

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/FromBroomeToPerth# Very early Tuesday morning we drove the 500kms + to Exmouth. The only way to describe the situation here is extortion. You are forced into caravan parks, with the nearest free camping 160km out of town. Our reason for wanting to be here is that every one we met along the way said that the Cape Range National Park was wonderful. The camping in the national park was full that night and we were told that we would have to line up […]

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/FromBroomeToPerth# We arrived as the sun was rising, checking out the Dales Gorge lookout. From the top it wasn’t spectacular but once we walked down into the valley to see the Circular pool, the colours came out and it was just beautiful. The rock walls, rich in iron, were formed by sediment that settled at the bottom of what was once a vast ocean. Earth movements raised these subsequently and the water eroded these amazing gorges. We then went […]

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/FromBroomeToPerth# Itinerary: Broome – Port Smith – 80 Mile Beach- Port Hedland – Karijini NP On Friday 21st August we set off for Port Smith to do some fishing. Although the fishing was a failure, the scenery was nice and we got to witness the amazingly fast tides that crept up by the second. From there we headed to 80 Mile Beach, where Cora found lots of nice shells to add to her already massive collection and Duncan and Toby went swimming. […]

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/FromDarwinToBroome# Itinerary/Itineraire: Derby - Broome On Sunday 16th we drove to Derby and stopped on the way to see the ‘prison boab tree’. The landscape out here is full of these interesting looking trees, some of which grow to be as old as 1000 years. This one in particular was used by the police in the late 1800’s to store prisoners whilst transporting them to Derby. The trunk of the tree is completely hollow and has only a small opening. […]

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/FromDarwinToBroome# Itinerary/Itineraire: Darwin – Howards Springs – Fogg Dam Wetlands in Mary River – Kakadu National Park From Darwin we headed to Howard Springs on Tuesday 4th Aug. The springs were unfortunately full of algae and so we couldn’t swim but did the really nice creek walk instead. From there we went to the Fogg Dam wetlands which were full of all sorts of birds and apparently crocs. Next stop was the Wetlands centre, where we had […]

We thought we could do with a little sum up of our travels in Australia. Here is a map of our itinerary so far. We drove more than 10,000km after we started in Melbourne in April. We have now reached Darwin after driving through the outback and nothingness for a few days! We expect to reach Melbourne by mid-October. The best campsites so far were in Victoria, so was the food and wine! One of the best moments was snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef. From here, we aim to Western Australia […]

Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/pnlvan09/FromAthertonTablelandsToDarwin# Finally we reached Darwin. We checked out the city. For us Darwin is nice but has nothing especially endearing. It is a city with new buildings, but not that many buildings. The layout is awkward and the people not that friendly. But worst of all is that it is not campervan friendly! They do their best to push people into the caravan parks. Having set up camp in a park, miles from the centre we hiked to Mindil […]
